  • Garmin Hits the Mark with Sponsorship

Garmin has announced it has signed Ryan Hall and Deena Kastor as sponsors of their products. Both runners say they train with Garmin products.

I like this pairing a lot. Hall and Kastor are the gold standard in terms of appeal within the running community. Both runners have a tremendously loyal following and seem to really connect with running fans. They both train out in the mountains of Mammoth Lakes, CA and a product like this would really come in handy when running unmarked roads or trails (can they really get signal through all the trees though?) These runners the top of there profession and Garmin products are top of the line. It’s a nice match.

Not only are they both runners a good fit for the product but this deal gives Garmin presence at the two biggest fall marathons – New York and Chicago. Instead of just putting up signage and having a booth at the NY and Chicago Expo’s, having Hall and Kastor speaking on Garmin’s behalf will be a great way to activate the sponsorship.

Here’s what Kastor had to say about the product:

“Garmin makes an incredible product. I get a head start on Ryan for
hard training runs and he tries to catch me. I usually look at my Garmin to see what pace I’m running or how much ground I have to cover in order to hold him off. I tease him right before I start by saying ‘Catch me if you can.’ Then, it is only my Garmin giving me information to fend him off. It is my secret weapon.”
For his part – Hall says his Garmin comes in handy – in Africa of all places:

“Garmin’s an essential part of my training. I spend a lot of time on
the road, and I’ve done tempo runs in Africa where I’m on a long hill in the middle of nowhere, along the villages, and I look down and know my mile splits, I know my pace, I have all that stuff right there for me.”
There is one thing about this that has sparked my curiosity. While Hall and Kastor obviously don’t need or use Garmin during marathons, I’m not sure professionals are even ALLOWED to wear these – even if they wanted - in either of these marathons. I believe New York bans professionals from using these devices (not sure about Chicago). I have searched on this but have found nothing- can anyone shed any light on this? Garmin is rolling out limited editions of its new FR60 watches in both New York and Chicago to correspond with the marathons. For more on the FR60 you can go here
